Yoga is Evenness of Mind

Yoga Bhoga Virtual Workshop

“Fixed in yoga, perform actions, having abandoned attachment, Arjuna, and having become indifferent to success or failure. It is said that evenness of mind is yoga.”

— Bhagavad Gita 2.48

This verse from the Bhagavad Gita is a thread of yoga philosophy which has been expounded upon throughout its long tradition. The outer self, known as our ego, understands itself by the outer world asserting its success and failures. In other words, when we receive positive recognition of our efforts, we experience a sense of joy and pride. When we are criticized and blamed, we feel small and weak. The teaching from the Bhagavad Gita reminds us that both of these experiences are transitory and squander our equanimity. Through establishing ourselves in the practice of yoga, we can see through these polarizing moments and maintain evenness of mind.
